With its New Dallas Distribution Center, Home Depot Builds a Best-in-Class Sustainable Delivery Network Powered by Hydrogen

February 9, 2021

In today’s dynamic marketplace, retailers are increasingly recognizing the value of resilient, sustainable supply chains. Home Depot, one of the largest North American home improvement retailers, is leveraging hydrogen’s unique value and environmental proposition to establish an industry-leading distribution strategy. As part of its $1.2 billion investment in its North American delivery network, the company recently announced the opening of a new 1.5 million-square-foot distribution center in Dallas, Texas. The facility will help meet customers’ evolving delivery needs, including for online and in-store pickup orders. As with its other distribution centers in other North American centers, Plug Power zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell systems will power the facility’s material handling fleets, including GenFuel hydrogen dispensers, storage and compression equipment as well as green hydrogen fuel.

For years, Home Depot has made bold commitments to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations and supply chain. A vital component of the company’s sustainability strategy is the deployment of forklifts powered by hydrogen fuel cells instead of lead-acid batteries. By Home Depot’s calculations, each deployment of 100 fuel cell-powered fleet vehicles reduces its electricity use by 1 million kWh and avoids 400 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. By incorporating GenFuel hydrogen infrastructure at its Dallas facility, Home Depot demonstrates the long-term sustainability, efficiency and productivity advantages that hydrogen brings to the $30 billion global material handling market.

Plug Power is proud to count Home Depot among our pedestal customers and valued partners. We congratulate the company on the opening of this key distribution hub and its commitment to the local economy, including the creation of 1,500 new jobs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. At a time of rapid change in the retail sector, Home Depot is cementing its status as a leader and innovator by providing convenient, efficient and sustainable shopping experiences to its customers.

We look forward to working closely with Home Depot as it continues to build the hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions supply chains of the future.
