In 2023, Plug announced a 1 GW project to produce green hydrogen in Kristinestad, Finland. In 2026, the project was officially qualified as a Project of Common Interest by the European Commission (PCI 11.5.3, Plug Power Kristinestad project).
The broad industrial development at the Kristinestad site includes a 300 MW electro Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF) project, developed in parallel with an up to 700 MW electrolytic hydrogen project that will supply green hydrogen to European industrial and energy markets through the emerging Nordic-Baltic hydrogen transport infrastructure.
The project is at an early stage. Plug and its partners are running the pre-studies on utilities connection and environmental impact assessment, a key milestone in the permitting process that will enable the project to move into its next phases. Potential synergies between the two projects, including shared infrastructure and utilities, are being investigated.

Where and how it works
The Kristinestad site connects large-scale electrolytic hydrogen production with e-fuel synthesis and gaseous hydrogen delivery across the emerging Nordic-Baltic hydrogen transport infrastructure.

Latest news
The Plug Power Kristinestad project was granted the European Commission's official status as a Project of Common Interest (PCI). The project contributes significantly to the development of cross-border trade and an integrated energy market in Europe, both strategic focus areas of the European Union.
Plug's green hydrogen production project in Kristinestad was awarded a 105.8 MEUR tax credit by Business Finland. The tax credit is part of a Finnish state-aid scheme targeting large clean-transition investments with a minimum investment cost of 50 MEUR, and is deducted from the company's corporate income tax.
